报告摘要：Many graduate students and junior researchers often feel difficult to create a research idea and even difficult to formulate a given engineering problem. This is an informal talk on research methodology with emphasis on wireless communications. Technical examples in communications research and historic stories in sciences are used to illustrate techniques of formulation, thoughts vs skills, and methodology.

Biography of Dr. Q.T. Zhang

Fellow, IEEE

Q.T. Zhang received the B.Eng. from Tsinghua University, Beijing, and M.Eng. from South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, China, both in wireless communications, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. After graduation from McMaster in 1986, he held a research position and Adjunct As-sistant Professorship at the same institution. In January 1992, he joined the Spar Aerospace Ltd., Satellite and Communication Systems Division, Montreal, as a Senior Member of Tech-nical Staff. At Spar Aerospace, he participated in the development and manufacturing of the Radar Satellite (Radarsat). He joined Ryerson University, Toronto in 1993 and became a Professor in 1999. In 1999, he took one-year sabbatical leave at the National University of Singapore, and is now a Chair Professor of Information Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong. His research interest is on wireless communications with current focus on wire- less MIMO, cooperative systems, and cognitive radio. He served the IEEE Communications Letters from 2000 to 2007, as an Associate Editor. Dr. Zhang is an IEEE Fellow.
